Design...not invent

Design is better than invention... there are infinite possibilities of design and redesign... but very few for invention and discovery

Private thoughts

I have been struggling to realize my ideas. Often the problem is that I am addressing an unrealistic gap / opportunity. Simply saying nobody cares for that need /gap which I came-up with the idea. Shh... don't say it loud..

The logic was that... if I come up with a groundbreaking idea ...it would give first mover advantage and ensure no competition ... and huge margins (ROI)... allowing me to be financially free....
It is like a learning painter wants to aim only for masterpieces. However this is a naive assumption...one shouldn't aim for any masterpiece (not in starting atleast). Dream first to get established. Have courage to go on for many - many years... so that one day few of the many that one created.. turn out to be masterpieces.

Instead aim for sale-able small pieces... and then get onto a marathon journey...

If you don't use your creation... no one will. Find areas which you find unsatisfactory.. Instead of revolutionary new need... look for revolutionary re-haul of existing... think Amazon or DELL - they didn't invent new business. They invented new way of existing business.

Existing players cannot experiment :
- because of current brand
- existing revenue / clients

As a new player look to change the game... not just improvements...

Improvement on existing as 80% target... only 20% to bring something new...

Even Google didn't invent new things...

Search, Maps, Mail, Blogs, ... all existed...
Google came up with new version... same is the case with iPod or iPhone...

Find existing business model / technology which is real... envision what could be 10X better... design, develop and market that as a breakthrough...

Projects

1. Accomplishable, more ambitious than previous one.
+10 if completed
- 5 if same level as previous
- 10 if less than previous
Time / effort are not metrics
Quality, ambition, completion are goals.
OK to slip, as long as I enjoyed thoroughly. Even abondonement ok, but with learnings.

2. Track
As many open projects ok. But less preferable.
Measure progress points of life.

Main project
Design
Brain research
Cooking
Digital drawing
watercolor
Blogs
Book

Web based tracking - Blogger !!

There are hobbies and there are jobs /missions.
Hobby is an activity I do to enjoy spare time
Job / Mission is activity that I do for a goal. Goals which are important to me.
accomplished Goals give happiness even if the activities don't.

So Hobbies - enjoy to max while producing some tangible results. Pleasure in doing it. (more process pleasure than target pride)
Job - Results provide the pleasure. Though process is also important. (More target happiness than process bliss).

While it is good to have hobbies to fill in the "blanks", it is the jobs that impact life positively or negatively.

1000 hobbies would not solve my job problems. Best way is to identify a alternative job. Though transition time could be long.

In that sense what could I be doing in five years (different from the jobs). Once upon a time I thought if I have enough money and time I would easily get into the ideal life. But now I have a new want, 'luck'. One needs luck, money and time to get into an ideal situation.

Now what could be my alternative business .... A painter ? a Cook? a writer ? a thinker ? designer ? Brain researcher ? Business man? cribber ? loser ? or something more exotic

It is not a specific role / kind I want to be. It is to identify a real alternative to job.

The idea is to find something that can be started at a lower level (no earning) but subsequently raised to earning level and then expertise level. Every role would have trouble. Either in form of getting certifications or huge amount of time to master the skills.

Some are outright no no s. let us see

Design Possible
Brain research Unlikely
Cooking Unlikely
Digital drawing Unlikely
watercolor Unlikely
Blogs possible (ideas)
Book Possible

though writing a book is not a easy thing.( There are so many competitors and difficult to find a recurring business. ) again and again this seems to be the idea.

Posting through email

This should be the easiest way of posting my blogs. Hopefully I would
be able to draft mails while travelling and send emails when I reach
home or office.
